How to Set Up GA4 Tracking On Shopify

Ollie Ody

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is the latest version of Google Analytics, released in October 2020. GA4 is a complete rewrite of Universal Analytics (UA) and introduces new features, including enhanced ecommerce tracking.

In this guide, we’ll show you how to set up GA4 ecommerce tracking on your Shopify store, explore its benefits, and explain how it differs from UA.

If you’re not already using GA4, now is the time to upgrade. Google sunset UA in July 2023, making GA4 the default analytics solution. Setting it up correctly ensures you continue to track essential ecommerce data in 2025 and beyond.

1. Create a GA4 Property

Start by creating a GA4 property in the Admin section of your Google Analytics account. Once created, you’ll receive a Measurement ID, which is required to set up tracking on Shopify.

2. Install the GA4 Tracking Code on Shopify

To install GA4 tracking on Shopify, you’ll need to add the GA4 tracking code. Follow our step-by-step guide to complete this process.

3. Enable Ecommerce Tracking in GA4

Once the tracking code is installed, go to the Admin section of your GA4 property. Under Ecommerce Settings, locate the Enable Ecommerce toggle and switch it on.

4. Analyse Your Data in GA4

Now that ecommerce tracking is enabled, you can view your sales and conversion data in GA4. Navigate to Reports > Monetisation > Ecommerce purchases to track key metrics such as revenue, conversion rates, and average order value.

These insights help you evaluate performance and make data-driven decisions to optimise your Shopify store.
