Agentic Commerce on Shopify: A Guide for DTC Brands

If you sell on Shopify, AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot can already read your catalogue and recommend your products. In some cases they can buy them too, without the customer ever opening your site. Shopify calls this Agentic Storefronts, and it's switched on whether you asked for it or not. Here's what it means for your brand and what's actually worth doing about it this quarter.

What is agentic commerce on Shopify?

Agentic commerce is shopping done by an AI agent rather than a person. Someone asks their assistant for a low-sugar kombucha subscription under £30 a month. The agent checks product data, availability and delivery, puts a shortlist together, and can complete the purchase once the customer says yes.

On Shopify you don't build this yourself. The platform has built it for you. Stripe reckons agentic shoppers could account for as much as $385 billion in US ecommerce spend by 2030, and Shopify wants its merchants first in the queue.

What Shopify has already built

Agentic Storefronts

Agentic Storefronts put Shopify catalogues inside AI assistants. When a shopper asks ChatGPT or Gemini a product question, your products can appear in the answer with pricing, details and availability pulled straight from your store.

There was no opt-in. It arrived with the platform, so the only real question is how well you show up.

The Shopify Catalog

Underneath Agentic Storefronts sits a structured catalogue layer. Agents don't browse your theme. They query this data: titles, descriptions, variants, metafields, stock and policies. That's what an agent uses to decide whether your product fits the brief, which makes catalogue quality a growth job rather than admin.

Checkout that agents can use

The Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) is an open standard from Stripe, OpenAI and Meta that sets out how agents manage carts and complete checkout for a buyer. Shopify's checkout is being built to work with it.

A purchase completed inside an AI conversation needs a checkout that works programmatically. If your build still relies on customisations that only work for human clicks, that's now a channel problem, not just technical debt.

How AI agents read your Shopify store

Here's the awkward bit. A lot of what DTC brands have spent the last decade investing in is invisible to an agent. Brand storytelling, lifestyle photography and clever landing pages don't exist in a structured product query.

What an agent reads is data. Product titles and descriptions, variant structure, metafields, price, stock, delivery promises, returns policy, review scores and schema markup. Two brands selling the same thing won't be recommended equally. The one with cleaner, more complete data gets the recommendation.

It's the same pattern we covered in the rise of social search. Discovery keeps moving away from the storefront, and the brands that win are the ones whose product information travels well.

How to prepare your Shopify store for agentic commerce

Sort the product catalogue first

Go through every product title, description and variant and check it's complete and accurate. Use metafields for the things agents get asked about: ingredients, dietary suitability, dimensions, materials, delivery times. Vague lifestyle copy with no attributes gives an agent nothing to work with.

Get the structured data right

Product schema, review schema, offer and availability markup and readable policy pages are how agents check what you claim. We've covered the full technical checklist in our guide to optimising your Shopify site for AI discovery, and the schema basics in our ecommerce SEO guide for DTC brands.

Check where you show up now

Before you optimise anything, benchmark. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the questions your customers would ask and note who gets recommended. There's a practical walkthrough in whether your products show up in ChatGPT.

Protect the subscription relationship

If subscription is your model, agentic commerce cuts both ways. Agents are good at one-off comparison purchases, but the recurring relationship still lives with you: the portal, swap and pause options, the retention flows.

A first order won through an agent is only worth having if your subscription setup turns it into a customer you keep.

Keep checkout current

Agent purchases will fail quietly on an outdated checkout. Getting onto Checkout Extensibility and keeping the build maintained matters here, and it's one of the reasons we push clients towards a properly structured Shopify Plus setup.

What not to do

Don't rebuild your acquisition strategy around a channel that's still a single-digit share of traffic for most brands. Don't pay for AI visibility tools before your own catalogue data is in order, because no tool fixes an incomplete product feed. And don't let the storefront slip. An agent's recommendation is only as strong as the trust signals your site gives it.

None of this is glamorous. Clean data, complete schema, a current checkout, and a regular check on where you're showing up. The brands that do that work now will be the default recommendation in their category when the volume arrives.

Shopify agentic commerce FAQs

What is Shopify agentic commerce?

Shopify agentic commerce is the platform's infrastructure for letting AI agents find, evaluate and buy products on a shopper's behalf. Through Agentic Storefronts, merchant catalogues are available to assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot, which query structured product data and can complete purchases without the shopper visiting the store's website.

Do I need to opt in to Agentic Storefronts?

No. Shopify has rolled agentic capability out at platform level, so most merchants are included by default rather than through a separate integration. What you control is how well you show up. The completeness of your catalogue data, schema and policies decides whether an agent recommends your product or a competitor's.

How do AI agents decide which Shopify products to recommend?

Agents match a shopper's brief against structured data: titles, descriptions, attributes, metafields, price, availability, delivery promises, returns policies and review signals. They can't see brand storytelling or photography the way people do. Products with complete, accurate, machine-readable data get matched more reliably and recommended more often than thin or vague listings.

What should a Shopify brand do first?

Start with the catalogue: complete, accurate titles, descriptions, variants and metafields for every product. Then add full product, review and offer schema so agents can verify your claims. Benchmark where your products currently appear in AI assistants, and make sure checkout runs on Shopify's extensible architecture so agent purchases can complete.

Will agentic commerce replace my Shopify storefront?

No. Agents act on behalf of people, and your storefront is still the source of the data, trust signals and policies they rely on. For subscription brands the ongoing relationship, including portals, retention flows and community, stays on your owned channels. The storefront becomes the verified record behind every channel rather than the only shop window.

Agentic commerce on Shopify rewards the brands with the cleanest product data. Get the catalogue, schema and checkout right now, while volumes are small, and the channel compounds in your favour. If you'd like a second pair of eyes on where your store stands, talk to us.
