Overview
Cheeky Panda came to us with more than a new set of brand guidelines – they brought a challenge: transform their online store into an experience that feels as cheeky, warm, and family-friendly as their name suggests.
In a product category often defined by the sensible and the traditional, Cheeky Panda breaks the mould with a business built on sustainable bamboo and a tongue-in-cheek approach to brand. They wanted a digital presence that carried the same playful energy and personality found in their products. This wasn’t just a website refresh; it was about creating a joyful, memorable experience in every click, scroll, and interaction.
From Serious to Smiling
The previous site was functional, but it didn’t reflect the cheeky, playful spirit of the brand. Our mission was to take it beyond the basics – creating an experience that felt engaging, characterful, and unmistakably Cheeky Panda, while keeping performance and usability front of mind.
With new brand assets in hand – bamboo shapes, hand-painted watercolours, and a brighter, more vibrant palette – we infused personality into every layer. From bold page backdrops to the smallest UI flourishes, the site now feels cohesive, inviting, and full of character.
Adding Personality Through Interaction
For Cheeky Panda, branding had to go beyond visuals – it needed to be felt in every interaction. We designed a series of playful micro-moments that inject personality into the shopping journey. One favourite: when an item is added to the cart, a panda head pops up with a cheeky wink. These small, unexpected touches don’t just decorate the site – they make it distinctive, memorable, and unmistakably Cheeky Panda.
The Toilet Paper Calculator
One of the most impactful new features is the toilet paper calculator – a three-question tool that helps customers find the right plan based on household size, number of bathrooms, and storage space. By matching customers to a subscription that genuinely fits their needs (48 rolls is no small box), the tool reduces uncertainty, builds confidence, and cuts churn.
It’s featured prominently on the homepage, with banners across product pages, and built to be flexible so the Cheeky Panda team can easily update questions and link outcomes to any product long after launch.
Gamifying the Cart for Bigger Baskets
To drive higher spend and make the cart experience more engaging, we built a gamified basket incentive system. Customers can clearly see which rewards unlock as they increase their order value – from discounts to surprise free gifts. At £45, for example, a pop-up reveals a bonus gift that can be added instantly, creating a moment of delight that turns checkout into more than just a transaction.
Crucially, the system is powered entirely by Shopify’s native functionality. No third-party apps, no developer dependency – the Cheeky Panda team can configure thresholds, tiers, and rewards themselves with ease. Or, in the client’s words: “STELLAR job on the cart. It truly is a masterpiece – so smooth, yet Cheeky, I love it!”
Storytelling with Style
Every page was designed to carry the new brand energy. On the Our Story page, static copy gave way to an interactive horizontal timeline, inviting users to explore Cheeky Panda’s journey in a more dynamic and visually engaging way. It transforms brand history from something to read into something to experience.
The Transformation
What started as a functional but serious site has been reimagined into a vibrant, personality-driven experience. From interactive tools to gamified incentives and playful panda moments, the redesign captures the essence of Cheeky Panda – warm, cheeky, and full of character.
This wasn’t just a new look. It was a complete shift in tone, interaction, and customer experience – resulting in a site that’s as engaging to explore as it is to shop from.
